I found a very old book called ‘The Stories of King Arthur’, which contains the story of Sir Gawaine, one of the knights of King Arthur’s Round Table. ‘The Lady of the Fountain’ is my interpretation of the lady in the legend who guards the sacred fountain and marries Sir Gawaine after he defeats the Black Knight.

This work captures the alchemical allegory of the celestial Capricornus as the master of fixation, the sacred alchemist’s process of binding the ethereal into the physical.
The mythical Sea-Goat is a majestic synthesis of opposites. The front half is painted in earthy, opaque gouache, embodying its earthly grounding; the torso is a serpentine tail that curves below in fluid aqua tones, representing the oceanic depths of volatile spirit and unformed matter. The Sea-Goat is ascending into the astrological celestial bodies. Shimmering accents of leafed gold catch the light, highlighting the moment of alchemic transformation.

Rusalka, a Ukrainian fertility spirit, is deeply connected to the land. Ukrainian folklore tells of the Rusalki dancing through the grains, embodying the very essence of growth, nature’s raw power, and bringing a bountiful harvest.
Her long, flowing hair is radiant, representing the ripe rye crops. This glowing hair serves as a visual manifestation of her magic and "otherness," symbolising her supernatural power to bless the fields and bring strong growth. As with traditional representations, she is depicted in her raw, natural form, her nudity representing a profound bond with the earth.
Ukrainians celebrate the spring/summer transition with 'Rusalka week' at the end of May and early June.

This work reimagines the 15th-century "Mermaid Chair" from St Senara’s Church in Zennor, Cornwall. Rendered in a medieval Venetian style with gold and silver gilding, the piece explores a dual narrative: the Christian warning against vanity and the Alchemical allegory of the "Great Work."
Within a gilded Gothic arch and a red and gold foliate border, the Mermaid sits as a figure of dual nature. To the Church, she is a siren of temptation, her gilded hair and mirror symbolising the "sins of the flesh." An anchor of faith descends from the shore, a vain attempt by the congregation to tether the soul of the young singer, Mathey Trewhella, to the terrestrial world.
However, through the lens of Alchemy, the scene depicts a Chymical Wedding. Mathey and the Mermaid undergo Solutio, the dissolving of the ego into the universal subconscious. Wrapped around the anchor, the Golden Fish represents the divine spirit discovered in the depths of matter. In this "Athanor" (alchemical furnace) of Zennor, Mathey achieves a "Crowned" state of spiritual perfection, transcending the mundane to join the primordial tides.

“She Lives for the Aten” is a tribute to the obscured legacy of Queen Ankhesenpaaten, the third daughter of Nefertiti and the devoted wife of Tutankhamun. Despite her prominence in the Amarna and post-Amarna periods, historical records of her life fade into silence after the death of the young Pharaoh. This piece seeks to reclaim her narrative from the shadows of antiquity, reanimating her presence through the very iconography that defined her era.
Drawing heavily from discovered artefacts, the image weaves authentic motifs into a contemporary visual celebration of her life. The goddess Isis, the mother of rebirth, extends her protective wings, simultaneously cradling Tutankhamun’s iconic death mask and Ankhesenpaaten herself, bridging the gap between the living and the eternal. The divine cobra, Uraeus, acts as a symbol of royal authority and a guardian against the erasure of her story. Aten (the sun-disk god for whom she was named) radiates ‘golden light’ across the many depicted scenes, ensuring that while her end remains a mystery, her memory remains luminous.

This artwork reimagines the Norse god Freyr through the vibrant, gilded lens of a medieval manuscript. Known to the Vikings as the deity of sunshine, peace, bountiful harvests and fertility, Freyr is presented here as a figure of pure life-force. At the heart of the illumination, he is enveloped by a radiant sun of gold leaf, while at his feet stands his magical companion, the golden boar Gullinbursti. Legend tells that the boar’s bristles glowed so intensely they could turn the darkest night into day, a brilliance captured here through the use of traditional gold accents.
Because Freyr represents the raw, procreative power of nature, he is framed by a dense thicket of winding, organic plants. A closer look at the spiralling roots and stems reveals phallic shapes, offering a bold and historically rooted nod to his ancient role as a god of fertility. These intricate natural patterns are highlighted in gilded paint, mirroring the "marginalia" often found in the borders of sacred medieval texts.
The piece has a deep red border and a rich blue background, colours chosen to evoke the regal palette of early royal prayer books. This work bridges the two distinct worlds of the Middle Ages and the wild energy of Northern myth. It is a celebration of growth, light, and the enduring power of the natural world.
